Matt Fontaine was born in Edmonton, Alberta and has diplomas from Grant MacEwan University from the Fine Art Program and the Design Studies program with a major in Design and Illustration. After graduating from the Design Studies program Matt went on to intern and eventually work at Elite Sportswear for about 7 and a half years. From there Matt moved onto another company where he was laid off shortly afterwards. In response to being laid off Matt started his search for full time graphic design jobs in Edmonton and after finding very little work available Matt decided to start freelancing as a graphic designer and illustrator.
Growing up, Matt's first love was comic books and drawing, this evolved into attending the Fine Art Program at Grant MacEwan. From there Matt was accepted into the BFA program at the University of Alberta where he quickly learned that that program wasnt for him. It was too focused on Fine Art and painting and Matt realized that his main interest was illustration. So Matt decided to go back to Grant MacEwan to do the Design Studies program with a major in Design and Illustration. After his time at Grant MacEwan he went to work at Elite Sportswear where he did art for apparel and anything else that came his way. During this time Matt continued working on his illustrations on the side and started to build his portfolio and slowly started to get work from publishers. Doing some work here and there for Grantland Quarterly and a small gig for Entertainment Weekly.
Now Matt is working as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator and as always is working on expanding his skills in drawing and illustration as well as creative design. Matt is available for hire. Please contact him at firstname.lastname@example.org or 780-240-1896 to discuss your project.
